ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED error

ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED appears when the site's server actively rejects the connection: the browser reached the right address but got a clear refusal back. This differs from a timeout, where nothing answers at all. Here the server does respond, but it says nothing is listening on that port.

What causes it

Usually no web server is running on the machine, or it listens on a different port than the browser expects. A firewall blocking ports 80 and 443, a broken config, or a suspended site on the hosting can also cause it.

How to fix it

  1. Double-check the address: try it with and without www, and http instead of https, in case the port is off.
  2. Clear the browser cache and DNS, then try again in an incognito window.
  3. Open the site from another network or mobile data to see if the problem is only local.
  4. If the site is yours, make sure the web server (LiteSpeed/Apache/Nginx) is running and restart it in the panel.
  5. Check the firewall and CSF for a blocked port 80/443 or a blocked IP address.
  6. Confirm the hosting account is active and not suspended for exceeding limits.
