Error guide / No MX record found

Missing MX record

A missing MX record means your domain's DNS does not say which server receives its mail. Without MX, other mail servers simply do not know where to deliver messages to @yourdomain, so they bounce back with an error. In plain terms, your domain has no mailing address for incoming mail.

What causes it

The domain owner or whoever set up DNS is at fault: the MX record was never added, was deleted during a hosting move, or points to a dead server. Sometimes mail is moved to another service (such as Google Workspace) but the old or empty MX is left behind.

How to fix it

  1. Check your domain's MX records with the tool below; if there are none, incoming mail cannot work.
  2. In cPanel Zone Editor, add an MX record pointing to your mail server (often the domain itself or mail.yourdomain).
  3. If mail runs on Google Workspace or another provider, enter their exact MX records with the right priorities.
  4. Make sure the host in the MX record has a working A record and is not a CNAME.
  5. Remove stray or outdated MX entries that still point to old hosting.
  6. After the changes, wait up to an hour and send a test message to a domain address.
