How to migrate a domain to new hosting without downtime

Moving a site to another host sounds like guaranteed downtime, but with the right order visitors never notice. The trick is to lower the TTL ahead of time, bring up a copy on the new server before touching DNS, and only then switch the records. You need this when changing hosts or upgrading to a stronger plan.

1. Lower record TTL in advance

   A day before the move, set the TTL of your A and NS records to 300 seconds in the current DNS zone. Then after the switch the world picks up the new data in 5 minutes instead of an hour or a day.

2. Bring the site up on the new server

   Create the account and upload files and databases to the new host (on cPanel the Backup Wizard, or a full account transfer in WHM, is easiest). Leave DNS untouched for now, the old site keeps serving.

3. Test the copy before changing DNS

   Add the new IP to the hosts file on your own computer and open the site. Confirm the pages, forms, and admin panel run on the new server rather than the old one.

4. Issue SSL on the new host

   Order or wait for AutoSSL for the domain on the new server. The certificate must be ready before the switch, otherwise visitors hit a not secure warning.

5. Switch NS or the A record

   If you move DNS too, change the NS at your registrar to the new ones. If the zone stays with the old provider, change only the A record to the new IP. Do it during your lowest-traffic hours.

6. Keep the old server for a few days

   DNS does not refresh instantly across providers, so do not delete the old account for 3 to 5 days. Some visitors will still reach the old IP for a while.

7. Restore TTL and check mail

   Once all traffic clearly lands on the new server, raise the TTL back to 3600. Separately check the MX records so mail does not stay behind on the old host.

How to verify the result

Run the domain through the TechGuard DNS checker and confirm the A record (or NS) points to the new server and MX leads where it should. The new server's response time shows up right away too.

Tip: Do not change NS or the IP until the copy on the new server is fully working, or visitors will land on a broken page.
