404 Error: The Page Could Not Be Found
404 Not Found means the server is working, but the page at that address does not exist. The file was deleted, renamed, or the link was wrong from the start. A single 404 is normal, but mass 404s hurt SEO and drive visitors away.

What causes it
The error comes from a changed or deleted URL, a typo in a link, a glitch after a site move, or a missing redirect rule.
How to fix it
- Check the address for typos and stray characters in the link.
- If the page moved, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one.
- Confirm the file actually exists in the right folder on the server.
- On a CMS, resave your permalinks and check that .htaccess is intact.
- Find broken links with a webmaster console or a site crawler and fix them.
- Build a helpful 404 page with a search box and a link home so you keep the visitor.
